Ask most people what Ibiza is known for and road cycling won’t be the first thing they mention. But anyone who has explored the island’s interior on a road bike discovers a completely different Ibiza: quiet lanes winding through pine forest, short and punchy climbs, the sea appearing around almost every bend and – outside the busy summer months – hardly any traffic at all.
In this guide we share the road cycling routes we ride ourselves, from an easy coastal spin to a tough loop through the hilly north, plus the practical tips that turn a good ride into a great one.
What Makes Ibiza So Good for Road Cycling?
A growing network of quiet back roads in the north. Over the past few years, a lot of new tarmac has been laid in the north of Ibiza. These roads are narrow and twisty, they climb through hills and pine woods, and very few cars or tourists ever use them. The key is to link these small roads together. Almost every busy main road has a quieter alternative running alongside it – know those connections and you’ll ride an Ibiza most visitors never see.
Lots of climbing in a compact island. Ibiza is small, but it’s anything but flat. The highest point sits at roughly 475 metres and many routes cross hills of 300 to 400 metres, so you can collect plenty of elevation in a short ride – ideal for training.
Better road surfaces than you’d expect. The main roads are well maintained, but the real treasures are the narrow inland lanes. They’re small and winding, yet the tarmac is surprisingly good, particularly in the north.
A long cycling season. From March through November the weather is on your side. In spring and autumn you can ride at any time of day; in high summer, early starts are the secret.

Road Cycling Routes in Ibiza for Every Level
🟢 Easy: The South Coast and the Ses Salines Salt Flats
New to cycling in Ibiza, or simply looking for a scenic ride without too much climbing? Head south. Starting from Santa Eulària or Ibiza Town, follow the coast down to the salt flats of Ses Salines, then return along a quieter inland road.
- Distance: 30–45 km
- Elevation gain: 250–350 m
- Difficulty: easy
- When to ride: all year round (avoid the midday heat in August)
Gentle gradients, open views over the sea and a relaxed pace make this the perfect first-day ride, or a loosener for anyone who wants to spin their legs without going into the red.
🟡 Moderate: The Inland Loop via Santa Gertrudis and Sant Miquel
This is Ibiza’s classic road cycling loop. It takes you through the heart of the island – past Santa Gertrudis, Sant Miquel and into the hills of the north – along old farmhouses and narrow roads that snake through the pine forest. Our advice: skip the main roads whenever you can and look for the smaller link roads. There’s almost always one, and it’s what turns an ordinary ride into one you’ll remember.
- Distance: 55–75 km
- Elevation gain: 700–900 m
- Difficulty: moderate
- When to ride: April–June and September–October
🔴 Challenging: The Wild North via Sant Joan
For stronger riders, the north is where Ibiza really shines. It’s the most beautiful and most demanding part of the island, crossed by recently built roads that are narrow, full of bends and almost completely remote. String them together and you get a ride without crowds and with a fresh view at every corner.
The road up to Sant Joan de Labritja climbs steadily and rewards you with sweeping views over the north coast. From Sant Joan, you can continue towards Portinatx or Cala de Sant Vicent, or head back over a different climb. The trick is the same as everywhere on the island: avoid the busy main road and hunt out the smaller connecting lanes. They ride much better than they look on the map, and you’ll have them almost entirely to yourself.
- Distance: 70–100 km
- Elevation gain: 1,000–1,400 m
- Difficulty: hard
- When to ride: April–May and September–November

Practical Tips Before You Ride
Get out early. Between June and September this is a must. Aim to be on the road before 9 am and get your kilometres done while it’s still cool – after 11 am the exposed roads heat up fast.
Carry more water than you think you need. Shops and water fountains are rare on the inland roads. In summer, plan on at least 750 ml per hour.
Plan your route and stay off the main roads. Ibiza almost always has a smaller, calmer road running parallel to the busy routes. Load your route into Komoot or your GPS before you set off and deliberately look for those quieter links. Some are narrow, but the surface is good – especially in the north – and you can ride entirely at your own pace.
