Most people come to Ibiza for the beaches and the nightlife. Cyclists come for something else entirely: quiet red-dirt roads cutting through pine forests, ancient agricultural tracks winding past hilltop fincas, and coastal paths with views that stop you in your tracks.
This is the Ibiza that gravel cyclists discover.
Gravel biking — riding a drop-bar bike built for mixed terrain — is one of the best ways to explore the island beyond the tourist trail. Ibiza has an extensive network of unpaved roads, forest tracks, and old farm paths that road bikes cannot reach. The gravel bike is perfectly suited for this terrain.
Why Ibiza is a Great Gravel Destination
The terrain. Around 50% of Ibiza’s inland roads are unpaved. From the red-earth tracks around Sant Joan to the limestone paths of the south coast, much of the island’s most beautiful landscape is only accessible off-road. A gravel bike opens up a completely different Ibiza.
The climbing. Ibiza is hillier than most visitors expect, and on unpaved surfaces every climb demands more than on tarmac. That extra challenge is exactly what gravel cyclists are looking for.
The season. Gravel riding is best in spring and autumn: April, May, September, and October. Tracks are firm but not bone-dry. In summer they become very dusty; after heavy winter rains some paths are temporarily unrideable.
The solitude. On Ibiza’s unpaved roads you will barely see a car. Just the odd local farmer, an occasional fellow cyclist, and the sound of the island.
Best Gravel Routes in Ibiza
🌲 North Ibiza: The Forest Tracks of Sant Joan
The north is the greenest, wildest part of the island. Around the village of Sant Joan de Labritja, a dense network of unpaved forest roads runs through pine-covered hills. This is the most classic gravel cycling terrain on Ibiza.
- Distance: 35–60 km depending on variant
- Elevation: 600–900 m
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging
- Best season: April–June, September–October
The route passes abandoned fincas, small roadside chapels, and occasional viewpoints looking out over the Mediterranean towards Formentera. In May the wildflowers are at their peak and the landscape is at its most beautiful.
🧂 South Ibiza: Salines and the Salt Flats
In the south lie the famous Ses Salines salt flats — a protected natural park with unique flat landscapes and pink flamingos. Gravel tracks run along the edge of the park, through quiet pine forests and down towards the southern coastline.
- Distance: 25–40 km
- Elevation: 300–450 m
- Difficulty: easy to moderate
- Best season: year-round (avoid peak summer near the beach areas)
This is one of the more accessible gravel routes on Ibiza — a great option for cyclists who want to go off-road without committing to the more demanding northern terrain.
🏔️ The Interior: Red Dirt Roads Between Santa Eulària and Sant Miquel
The inland area between Santa Eulàri and Sant Miquel is criss-crossed with the red-brown earth roads that are characteristic of Ibiza. These tracks are perfect for gravel riding: wide enough to ride comfortably, but unpaved enough to feel genuinely adventurous.
- Distance: 40–55 km
- Elevation: 700–1,000 m
- Difficulty: moderate to challenging
- Best season: April–May, September–November
At the highest points of this route you have views across almost the entire island. On clear days you can see Formentera to the south and the rocky northern coastline at the same time.
Gravel Bike or MTB: Which Should You Choose for Ibiza?
Ibiza actually has a surprising amount of singletrack — narrow technical trails through pine forests and along the rocky coastline. But to be honest, those are better explored on an e-bike or a mountain bike. A gravel bike is not the ideal tool for Ibiza’s more technical singletrack.
Where the gravel bike truly excels is on the island’s extensive network of wide unpaved roads, red-dirt tracks, and mixed-surface routes through the interior. That kind of terrain makes up the majority of off-road riding on Ibiza, and that is where a gravel bike is perfectly at home.
In short: gravel for unpaved roads and longer mixed rides, e-bike or MTB for singletrack.
Practical Tips for Gravel Cyclists in Ibiza
Water. There are almost no shops or water fountains on the unpaved inland roads. Bring at least 1.5 litres per 30 km, and more in summer.
Navigation. Many gravel tracks are not on standard maps. Download your route in advance on a GPS device or cycling app like Komoot or Wikiloc. Without navigation you will get lost in the interior.
Tyres. On rental bikes, tyres are always appropriate for the terrain. On your own gravel bike, 35–40 mm tyres work best on Ibiza — wide enough for loose surfaces, narrow enough to roll comfortably on tarmac.
Start early. Be on the road before 9h, especially from June to August. On unpaved tracks in full sun the heat feels even more intense than on tarmac.
